RNSYS's John Roy Wins 4th Annual Nova Scotia Match Racing Championship

Bedford, NS, September 12, 1999 - The 1999 Nova Scotia Match Racing Championships, held today in the Bedford Basin, was won by skipper John Roy, representing the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron. Roy defeated Erik Koppernaes of the Bedford Basin Yacht Club. Roy, who also was part of a team that captured their class in this year's Marblehead race and has won five Polaris match racing championships, won the best of three final two to one in a double round robin event which began early Sunday morning. Saturday's races were cancelled due to strong winds that reached 40m knots (60km/h). The third competitor in the J24 class boats was skippered by Tony Moore of the St. Margaret's Sailing Club.

Race chairman Rod Wark said Sunday's race was run under perfect conditions. "We witnessed great boat handling and an exciting tactical duel in the final," said Wark. "The finals came down to the last race, with all races really tight until the end. All participants reported a good time was had all around."

Peter Graham-Dwyer, representing the primary sponsor William Alexander & Associates Ltd., presented the David Forsyth trophy to the winning team of David Roy, skipper; Paul Gallant, foredeck; Robert Gale, tactician; Rob Thompson, mastman and Stuart McCrae, trimmer. The BBYC team consisted of Erik Koppernaes, skipper; Matt Christie, foredeck; Andrew Brewer, tactician; Nick Phillips, mastman and Donnie Rodgerson, trimmer.
