DEFENDING CHAMPION JOHN ROY WINS 5TH ANNUAL NOVA SCOTIA MATCH RACING CHAMPIONSHIP
Bedford NS, September 10, 2000 - The 2000 Nova Scotia Match Racing Championships, held this weekend in the Bedford Basin, was won by skipper John Roy, representing the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron. Roy defeated Rory MacDonald also of the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron two races to none. Roy, who also was part of a team that captured their class in last year's Marblehead race, has now won two Nova Scotia Match Racing titles and five Polaris match racing championships. Also competeing on Sunday in the semi-finals were Eric Smith of the RNSYS and Erik Koppernaes of the BBYC.
Race chairman Rod Wark said this weekend's races were run under spectacular conditions although winds were light on Sunday. "We witnessed great boat handling and exciting tactical duels throughout the weekend," said Wark. "The finals came down to the winner of the William Alexander & Associates trophy for first place in the round robin, Rory MacDonald, versus the 1999 defending champion, John Roy. Participants reported a tremendous time was had all around."
Peter Graham Dwyer, representing the primary sponsor William Alexander & Associates Ltd., presented the David Forsyth trophy to the winning team of John Roy, skipper; Paul Gallant, foredeck; Matt Christie, jib trimmer / tactician; Scott Baker, panel; Chris Shaw, jib trimmer; Stuart McCrae, main trimmer; and Andrew Roy, mastman. Rory's team included Rory Macdonald, skipper, Sean McDermott, main trimmer, Matt Bourgal, jib trimmer, Shannon Tilley, spinnaker trimmer, Andrew Orr, panel, Nick Phillips, mastman and Joe Sampson, foredeck.
The 5th annual Nova Scotia Match Racing event was a success thanks to the support of Impact Promotional Products, Nova Communications, Oland Brewery, Quantum Sailmakers, William Alexander & Associates and xwave.
